Going Green

What Does It Mean to Go Green?

Everyone seems interested in "going green" these days. But what does it really mean?

The modern phrase "going green" simply refers to a commitment to preserving the environment through conservation and other methods designed to make the world a healthier place for all.

We all want to be healthier, but applying a green philosophy to everyday life can be a bit tricky. For some, the change comes naturally. For others, it may require a major change.

Here are some easy everyday ways to begin doing your part in going green:

Around Your Home
  • Laundry- Use detergents with all natural ingredients, and hang clothes out to dry, instead of using the dryer
  • Cleaning- Do not use chemicals to clean around the house. Products with all natural ingredients can do the job without releasing chemicals into the air
  • Temperature control-Adjust heating or cooling for only one degree to make a world of difference in your utility bills and how much energy you consume
  • Turn the water heater down- Be sure your family is using the right size
  • water heater, or consider going "tankless" for even greater energy savings
  • Reduce trash- Forget paper plates and cups. Eat out less often and eliminate fast food trash
  • Recycle- Participate in city programs by saving plastic bottles, cans, and newspaper in separate receptacles for recycling
Around Your Neighborhood
  • Automobile- Do not idle your car longer than necessary. Make necessary repairs and keep up with a reasonable maintenance schedule
  • Transportation- Take public transit when available to reduce pollution and gas consumption. For short distances, ride a bike or walk.
  • Waste- Dispose of used oil, batteries, and other hazardous materials properly to avoid polluting the environment.
When Shopping
  • Products- Purchase fresh, natural items, locally grown if possible, rather than prepackaged and prepared foods that are unhealthy and have excessive packaging
  • Shopping- Use reusable shopping bags rather than paper or plastic.
A Key Green Element

Home improvements are another important way to do you part in going green. Did you know that green building practices are healthier for you and for the world? Metal roofing is environmentally friendly, with more than 25% recycled content, and is 100% recyclable, compared to traditional roofing products like asphalt that contribute more than thirteen billion pounds of waste to American landfills every year. Metal roofing sheets are often laid right over old shingles, meaning you can go green with every shingle that doesn't end up adding to the planet's waste.

Others types of green remodeling include replacing worn-out doors, windows and siding for greater energy efficiency, and adding other elements to your home, such as a programmable thermostat, ceiling fans, new insulation, and efficient lighting to ensure you are truly going green.
