Seamless Gutters in the Winter

Preparing to winterize your house for the harsh cold and storms of winter?

Seamless gutters are perfect for replacing the old, worn out gutters on your home. Protecting your home from burglars and other harm is not the only safety precaution you should must take. Making sure your home is ready for the winter season is also important. One major step in readying your house for the winter is replacing old gutters or worn out gutters with new ones. Your best bet? Go with the seamless gutters.

What Can Bad Gutters Cause?

If your gutters are older than 10 years, consider replacing them with seamless gutters. Having old or damaged gutters can cause a host of problems with your house during the wintertime.

  • Cracks in the foundation are caused by the continued pooling of water that occurs when gutters are clogged. This can loosen the foundation and cause costly repairs.
  • If water continues to build up on the roof of your house instead of draining properly, it can cause rotting of the wood on the roof. Rotted wood can break, fall off the house, and injure someone below.
  • A leaky roof can also be caused by clogged gutters. The water cannot drain properly and begins to seep through the roof, building up in the ceiling of the house.
  • Gutters usually move water off the roof but away from high traffic areas around the house, like sidewalks and the driveway. If the gutters are clogged during the wintertime, the water could begin to drain itself over the driveway and the sidewalks instead of onto the grass. This can cause patches of frozen areas that can be dangerous to the people in the household.
  • Icicles can develop on the outside of the gutters, since they will overflow with water if they are clogged, and will dangle over the heads of adults and children walking around outside. This can become extremely dangerous. If the icicles break and fall, someone can be seriously injured.

Preparing Your Gutters for Winter

Gutter maintenance can be a daunting and expensive task none of us wants to think about. But preparing your gutters for the wintertime can be well worth it when you look at the big picture. Replacing worn out and broken gutters before storms hit can help save tons of money. If you don't replace your broken gutters, it can lead to replacing the entire roof, fixing the driveway or paying costly medical bills because of a tragic injury from a falling icicle.

How do you prepare your gutters for the winter?

Get up on a ladder and look for clogging, including leaves and the possibility of dead animals. Clean the gutters out and look for spots where there could be damage to the gutters. If you need to replace your gutters, purchase seamless gutters. Seamless gutters allow for continuous water flow throughout and reduce the possibility of leaks.
